Sometimes the hardest part of de-cluttering your home is getting started because the task at hand seems so overwhelming, one wonders where do I start, and how am I going to clean up this clutter?
Well the first thing to do is just get started. Start in one room, for instance if you start in the master bedroom start in the clothes closet. Usually people have clothes they were wearing several years ago and they are no longer in style or fit. One rule of thumb is if you have not worn a garment during the past year you will never wear it again. If the clothing is in good condition and clean you can take it to a consignment clothing store to sell it. The store owner/manager may agree to place it on one of their racks and display it for sale. You and the store manager will agree on a percentage for example the store may want to keep a percentage of the sale for their trouble. Or you can donate your clothing, shoes, household goods that you do not use anymore to a charitable organization.
Another fun and profitable way to get rid of things you do not use anymore is to organize a garage sale.
You can ask family and friends to help you organize one. You could organize a block garage sale by getting all the neighbours living on your street to sell any unwanted items they may have. This would be great fun to have the whole street hold garage sales at the same time on the same day. The neighbours can get excited about de-cluttering their homes too. You can all help each other. If a neighbour has a computer they could make up fliers to distribute around the neighbourhood advertising the block garage sale with the day, date and time of the sale.
Maybe one of the neighbours could set up a hot dog stand on the street and sell these too or give a hot dog to customers who make a purchase. The children could set up a lemonade stand also and I am sure they would have fun selling lemonade. People love garage sales, hot dogs and lemonade.
If you are going to go the route of the garage sale, just go from room to room and get rid of everything you don't need anymore, such as clothing, shoes, toys, comic books, magazines, pots, pans, electronics etc.
Anything you do not sell during the garage sale just donate to the Salvation Army, Dress for Success or any other charitable organization of your choice. They will be thrilled to take good clean items off your hands.
Everybody has stuff they don't use anymore, a garage sale is great, you can make some extra money. Getting other people involved will make the daunting task of decluttering your home so much easier. Just imagine all the extra room you will have for the things you use everyday. Your home will look so much better and larger. Just get started.
