Working at Home With Special Needs Kids - It Can Be Rewarding in More Ways Than One By Scott Seaman

Yesterday I had to leave my home office to go buy some water. It seemed that the city of Boston's water supply had just been interrupted by a major break in a 10' supply pipe somewhere west of the city. The fact that I recently started working from home has opened up a whole new way of life that I could only dream about before. The primary advantage in this instance was twofold. First I was able to get some water before it was all sold out at our local market but more importantly I was able to spend some quality time with our special needs daughter.
Quality time with the family is becoming a scarce commodity these days as families struggle to make up for shrinking incomes or lost jobs. I am fortunate to be able to control my own schedule now and come and go when it suites me. For the parents of many of these kids the lack of quality time is compounded by the fact that usually one parent has to stay home (as a care giver) after the graduation further straining the family budget. The other spouse takes on a second job or the wife goes to work when the husband comes home. My wife was one of those and the strain it put on our finances was hard to deal with. The needs of our daughter were not severe enough to warrant full time day care, nor did we really want to.
Special needs kids are givers. Now, back to my story about the water shortage. Mary and I got on our bikes and rode to the store a couple of blocks from our house. She elected to wait outside with the bikes while I went into the store. When I returned she was chatting with a woman who worked at the high school where Mary had had a training job in the cafeteria almost ten years ago. I joined in the conversation and listened as this woman shared fond memories about how Mary was always so upbeat with a smile and a kind word. Even now, she comes home with a story about a family she met at work (at a local Children's Hospital) and some kind words and heartfelt comments. She meant every word. She is constantly giving of herself to others.
Special needs kids need a chance. Many of Mary's school mates are at home today or involved in day long programs that offer little in the way of growth opportunity. We were fortunate that she was able to land a part time job for 12 hours per week and a volunteer job for another 3. The fact that my wife was able to stay at home enables Mary to work the crazy hours she does.
Many of these kids are very loyal and in most cases are liked and appreciated by their fellow workers. Like most parents of special needs kids we have done everything we can to give Mary every opportunity for personal growth and advancement.
My ability to Work from Home has enabled me to spend more time with my kids since I can work when ever and where ever I want. Recently the income from the day job I had was shrinking along with the economy and the only way to generate more money was a second job but the potential income gain just didn't make sense.
I needed to find a better way and turned to the internet. I did some homework, learned about something called leverage and marketing on the internet. I got plugged in got some great training and found I could accomplish far more from home with less stress and increase my income at the same time.
The experience of working from home is new for all of us. There were, and will continue to be, a few ups and downs along the way but with proper guidance and training our financial future has never looked brighter. I will be able to share experiences like these in the future and appreciate firsthand what our daughter has to give.
